FLCC golf carts treated with BioSweep Surface Defense

To keep all our members as safe as possible during these difficult times, FLCC has teamed with one of our own members that owns BioSweep of Northern Virginia.  They have donated their time and resources to decontaminate and spray all of our golf carts with their long-lasting Antimicrobial Surface Defense treatment.

The treatment was completed Sunday night and provides an antimicrobial barrier (up to 9 months) when applied correctly.  If you are interested in learning more about this inexpensive way to protect your own personal cart or other applications, you can visit their website:  BioSweepNorthernVirginia.com  or call at 540-907-6464As a courtesy to our members, BioSweep is willing to make house calls and treat members carts for just $20.

Reminder from the FLCC Rules & Handicap Committee: GHIN Digital Profile

To improve data security and golfer privacy, golfers will need to create a digital profile to access the GHIN Mobile App and ghin.com beginning in January 2021

In order to create a digital profile, golfers will need to have an email address in their golfer profile. To provide an email address, please contact your Club Admin or local golf association.

Below is some additional information and frequently asked questions:

Q: Why and when will I need to create a digital profile with a unique email address to log into the GHIN mobile app and ghin.com?

A:In order to improve data security and golfer privacy, golfers will need to create a digital profile to access the GHIN Mobile App and ghin.com beginning in January 2021. Users are required to have a unique email address to create a digital profile and access the GHIN Mobile App and ghin.com.

Q: How do I add my email address to my profile so that my digital profile can be created?

A: You can request that your Club Admin or local golf association update your profile within the USGA Admin Portal.

Q: In January 2021, how will I access the GHIN mobile app and ghin.com with my digital profile?

A: When creating a digital profile, you will set a password for your account.  You will then log in to the GHIN Mobile App and ghin.com with your email address or GHIN Number and the password that you created.

Q: I share an email address with my spouse/partner, can we log in with the same email address?

A: No, only one digital profile can be tied to one unique email address. The first person to set up a digital profile will “claim” that email address. Another email address must be provided for the other golfer.

Q: What if I do not provide an email address, how can I post a score?

A: If you do not provide an email address, you will not be able to create a digital profile and log in to the GHIN Mobile App or ghin.com. You will be able to access a Club Kiosk or have your Club Admin post a score on your behalf.

Q: Will I be able to post a score for my child?

A:Yes, your club can assign you as a guardian for a child. When we launch the digital profile feature in January 2021, you will log in and see a “Change Golfer” link on the GHIN Mobile App and ghin.com. Here, you can change who you are viewing/posting scores for.

Course Update

Bridges:  We are hoping to start the bridge cleaning and staining soon.  The cleaning process is easy during play as the guys just step aside for traffic to pass.  The staining process requires some sun, low humidity and mild temperatures.  On days when staining is possible, we may have to close some holes to get the job done.  It doesn’t take long to dry, but it will likely have to happen on days that are nice which means golf will be an issue.  The Pro Shop staff will brief golfers when they check-in.

Cart Paths:  A full update is available on the Golf Blog:  www.flccgolf.com.  Some temporary relief to the worst cart path bumps is planned for early December.  We’ll rent a mini excavator with a jackhammer and bust as much up as we can.  We’ll then remove the broken concrete and replace it with crushed stone.  The permanent repair process is planned to start in April 2021.  Tree removal will continue over the winter months.

Greens:  We are going to try and get greens aerated with solid tines over the next couple of weeks if everything goes well.  They are not functioning properly and we want to try and encourage them to dry out quicker following rain events.  If they spend all winter sitting in water, they will not perform well next year.  We plan to purchase a deep tine aerator next spring and have the ability to do the job better and more timely.

Cart Path Repair Plan Update

Click here to view the "December 2019 Cart Path Presentation"

November 2020 Update: Cart paths continue to be one of our biggest warts and although we started the repair process earlier this year, we have yet to begin the act of removing and replacing concrete.  You may recall in earlier reports that we planned on starting a multi-year project this year.  That plan includes removing trees that are causing problems and/or likely to cause problems.  Then we'll remove and replace broken sections of path.  We began the tree removal portion of this year's path project in late winter by removing 85 trees along the path on holes 3 and 4.  We intended to do most of the path replacement on those holes this year, but COVID intervened.  COVID related changes to the golf schedule ate up much of the planned timeframe for concrete work this fall.  Additionally, the contractor we selected recently went out of business.  We have a new, much more qualified contractor selected and a new plan of attack from this point forward.

How will we proceed?  The new plan....

The concrete on holes 3 and 4 will be replaced in the spring of 2021 instead of this fall for the reasons mentioned above.  We have flagged April 19-30 for this to occur.  That coincides with greens aeration and therefore should minimize disruption to play.  Holes 3-5 or possibly the entire front nine will be closed for this work to occur.

In the meantime we plan to rent equipment to break up some of the worst sections this fall and replace with stone.  This is obviously a band aid, but should give us some temporary relief from the bone jarring bumps.

We plan to remove the problem causing trees on several other holes this winter in preparation for the next wave of path repairs.

It is expected that this new contractor, Flatline Contractors Inc. will be able to do much more work in smaller windows of time than all previous contractors we've used or considered.  They specialize in golf cart paths and are equipped for the unique aspects of golf course cart path work.  That will hopefully allow us to move from a 5 to 6 year plan to a 3-4 year plan provided the budget has flexibility.  I think we would all agree that getting this done is critical as is doing it as quickly as possible.

Quick note on fall leaf removal

Leaf season can be very frustrating.  A clean yard today can be a mess again tomorrow.  Both the golf course staff and FLCA landscape staff are overwhelmed with leaf removal in their respective areas of responsibility.  It is important to remember that you are responsible for the leaves on your property and that the staff (FLCA landscape and FLCC golf course) does not provide that service for residents.  We’d love to help, but are not equipped or staffed to provide leaf removal service.  Please refrain from piling your leaves up on the golf course or other common areas.  Additionally, while we can’t control the wind, we will make sure not to move leaves off of our property.  Thank you for your help.

MVSGA Champions

The Fawn Lake Men’s “Traveling Team” won the 2020 Mid-Virginia Senior Golf Association Championship at Fredericksburg Country Club defeating the Lee’s Hill Golf Club Team 83 to 79.  The Team had an undefeated regular season record of 7 – 0 – 1 defeating Fredericksburg Country Club, Lee’s Hill Golf Club, Gauntlet Golf Club, each twice and Lake of the Woods Golf Club with one win and one tie.  The trophy moves from Culpeper Country Club, the 2019 Champion to Fawn Lake at the Captain’s Meeting in October.

The Championship came down to the wire with the final two teams each reporting narrow wins to clinch the Championship.  Captain Ron Bishop regularly reminded his players that just one putt can mean the difference between a win and a loss.  The season was abbreviated by the Covid-19 pandemic with 5 of 9 teams participating.  While the Championship Team shown below capped a successful season, fifteen other players contributed to the Championship season.  They are Keith Armstrong, Dave Bartoszek, Lou Detroia, Janamitra Devan, Mike Edwards, Jeff Kramer, Ray McCutcheon, Ed Migliore, Mike Mikolosko, Randy Royce, Craig Rutler, Bob Ryan, Drew Sites, Terry Thompson, John Wanat.

The Winning Team:

Jim Avery,  Ron Bishop, Henry Dorsett, Barry Duehring, Bob Gauvin, Brad Gregory, Jerry Henderson, Karl Karch, Tom Moore, Ron Morris, Steve Pendry, Craig Reed, Steve Robertson, Dan Scherder, Tom Schneider, Bob Stumpf, Tim Tarzier, Dave Walsh.

FLCC Women's Golf Update

Bette Connelly is leaving Fawn Lake and the LGA, moving to Urbana. She has been an active supporter of all things Golf and cherished member and President of the LGA. Thank you, Bette, for everything you have done for our Club, we will miss you! Ginny McGrath has assumed the Presidency of the LGA and Brenda Sites is Treasurer.

Women's Match Play has been completed. Becki Davis was the winner of the final over Mary Ryan, 2&1. These matches have validated our hole handicap update from earlier this year, with every match extending at least through hole 16.

Three members of women's golf played in the most recent FredAm with 2 finishing in the top 4:  Kristin Shifflett finished 1st and Becki Davis took 4th.  Way to go!!

Three members competed in the VSGA Stroke Play Championships held this year at Kingsmill (River Course). Brenda Sites competed in the Senior Division. Becki Davis and Roberta Karch competed in the Super Senior Division. Becki Davis took Runner-Up.

The VSGA Women's Team Matches are being held 9/1-9/3 at Devil's Knob Golf Course and Fawn Lake is once again fielding a team. Members are Kristin Shifflett, Brenda Sites, Deborah McManus, Carol Pendry, Roberta Karch, and Becki Davis.  Good luck to our FLCC Team!

Lastly, Sandy Forville graciously took the time and effort to make masks for every member of the LGA. They are truly wonderful and much appreciated!

Course Update

All 18 holes and the 2 practice greens have been aerated.  After the rain last night, the course remains unplayable today (Wednesday).  We are also unable to mow.  We will open for play on Thursday with tee times starting at 0800.  Cart path only, it will be messy.

Additionally, on Monday, August 24, the course will be closed until 3:00pm at which time play can resume under normal Monday Golf Rules.  This will allow maintenance time to finish the sand top-dressing needed for aeration and catch up on mowing.  We have a very busy golf calendar for the remainder of the year and taking care of this much-needed maintenance will serve us well.  We appreciate your support!

Golf Course Maintenance

Dave and his staff are working very hard keeping our course in shape during these hot, dry conditions.  As you have seen, they are hand-watering the course daily.  If you come across them during your round, please allow them a few minutes to finish what they are doing and move out of your way before playing your shot.  They will not hold up play for long.  Sometimes we assume they are going to be there a while and we get impatient.  Please do not hit into them.  The safety of our staff is always our primary concern.  Thank you for the consideration and we appreciate your support!

Update on COVID-19 Temporary Golf Policy Changes

We added restrictions to our golf operations to ensure the safety of our members and keep our course open. We are slowly removing those restrictions.

  • Effective immediately, the noodle hole inserts have been removed and members are authorized to remove the flagstick as per the Rules of Golf.
  • Effective Tuesday, July 14, we will be playing the ball down in the bunkers and raking the bunker after a shot will be required. The temporary sand bunker "lift, clean, and place" rule will no longer be in effect.
    • It is recommended that players use a golf towel or hand sanitizer as appropriate. The safety of our members is still our top priority!
    • Bunker rakes will be left in the bunkers, parallel to the line of play and in a low spot (if possible).
    • Any ball resting against a bunker rake will be played in accordance with USGA Rules of Golf: 15.2, posted below.
  • Single rider carts are still optional but not mandatory. This is the only COVID restriction still in effect after Tuesday. Reminder: no more than 2 carts in the fairway per hole mandatory.

USGA Rules of Golf: Rule 15.2
If a player’s ball moves while he or she is removing a movable obstruction:
  • There is no penalty, and
  • The ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated)
A rake is a movable obstruction. When a ball comes to rest leaning against a rake in the bunker, the player may remove the obstruction. If the ball moves as a result of moving the obstruction, he must replace it. If the ball will not come to rest on the spot where it is placed, he must try again. If the ball will not come to rest on the spot after the second try to place it, the player must place the ball at the nearest spot where it will not move that is no closer to the hole.

Golf Rounds Report - June 2020

If you are a golfer then you know our golf rounds are up.  How much you may not know...

In June 2020, we played 2,511 rounds of golf.  That is a record for FLCC!  Keep in mind, this is mostly member play.  We have had almost no outside events.

As a comparison vs 2018, that's an 85% increase, vs 2019 a 34% increase.

Our lessons and equipment sales are also at record levels.

We thank our current loyal members and our many new members for their support and we look forward to another busy month on the course!

Click Golf Analysis June 2020 for more information.

BIG THANKS TO DREW, GARRETT AND THE STAFF FOR ALL THEIR HARD WORK!!

FLCC Men’s Member-Guest Invitational

Due to Covid-19 restrictions on our golf operations, the FLCC Men’s Member-Member and Member-Guest dates were swapped. This allows our guests more time to plan and gives us the best chance to host both events.  The 2020 FLCC Member-Guest Invitational will be held: Thursday, July 30 – Saturday, August 1.

The format is very similar to previous years with one exception, we will not have the couple’s awards dinner on Saturday.  Our date swap from the virus resulted in a scheduling conflict at The Cove.  Instead, the awards ceremony will immediately follow the Shootout and be held on the 18th green.

  • In 2019, the registration fee was $675.  With a roughly 25% increase in food cost from the coronavirus, we were looking at $725 or more for this year. Without the awards dinner, the registration fee for 2020 is $575.
  • With the implementation of the World Handicap System Playing Handicap, golfers can choose from the Green, White, or Blue tees.  The member and the guest can even play from different tees.
  • The format remains the same as last year:
    • Thursday, July 30 - 18 hole practice round (One Best Ball Stroke Play), player dinner and Calcutta after.
    • Friday, July 31 - 18 or 27 hole option (Four-Ball Match Play).  Any member and guest who both play the Green tees with play 18 holes on Friday.  All other combos (Blue-Blue, Blue-White, White-White, Blue-Green, etc.) will play 27.
    • Saturday, August 1 - 18 holes (Four-Ball Match Play) and the Shootout.  Award presentation immediately after on the 18th green.
  • On Friday after play, our club is hosting a “Patio Friday.”  We plan to open all 3 venues (Grille, Harbor Club, and The Cove) with food and live music.  This is a great chance to bring spouses and guests so they can see our new venues.  The cost is not included in the Member-Guest registration.

Other great ideas are being discussed and more information will be coming from the Tournament Committee.  Registration details will be in this week’s Golf Gazette.  We are very excited to host a great event and hope you can join us!

2020 Member-Guest Tournament Committee:
  • Keith Armstrong
  • Terry Thompson
  • Ben Maxwell
  • Ron Morris
  • Drew Falvey, PGA

  • Bret Shifflett, GM, PGA
