GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE 13-14 DECEMBER

 MESSAGE FROM DAVE SMITH:

FLCC Course Maintenance

Greens Aeration Notice

Posted: 08 Dec 2021 07:40 AM PST

We have an unusually pleasant weather forecast for the next 10 days so we will take advantage of this opportunity to "aerate" greens.  Much like last December, we'll use very small tines and remove just a little bit of the excess organic matter.  We expect to have nine holes closed on Monday and Tuesday in order to get this done.  Frosty mornings may slow us down and require some time on Wednesday to wrap up.

The holes will remain visible for much, if not all, of the winter, but should not impact putting enough to notice.  We will also use our new deep tine aerator on a few greens in order to get familiar with it and gain some info for future use.  It may be something we'll prefer to do this time of year in addition to, or instead of, spring.  We just want to try it and see how it goes for planning purposes.

You may remember that in August we had a full week of rain when we were scheduled for core aeration.  We had to push the job back and, as a result, were not able to pull cores as originally planned, due to the golf tournament schedule.  We used solid tines instead, but that doesn't fully address some of the age/resource related challenges greens are facing.  Aging greens need more and more input as the years go by.  We can't afford to miss opportunities like this to do something good for them.  When weather is suitable for turf growth in the spring, summer, and fall we can be more aggressive with our efforts.  However, doing a little now is better than doing nothing.

FLCC LEAF CONTROL

MESSAGE FROM FLCC SUPERINTENDENT, DAVE SMITH

FLCC Course Maintenance

Leaf Season Notes

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 03:38 PM PST

Just before the big leaf drop.  Ginny has her hands full with leaves at the clubhouse.

We've been blowing and mulching leaves almost non-stop for the past couple of weeks.  Until this week the challenge has been manageable, but that is changing quickly.  For the next several weeks we will be outmanned by mother nature.  In my first few years we had numerous areas to blow leaves for mulching or vacuuming.  Today we really don't have anywhere to stage them as we are surrounded by homes.  We do the best we can to keep them out of the key areas of play without putting them on neighboring property. We then either mulch them with our mowers or vacuum them up. The vac takes a long time and is generally not a big benefit until most of the leaves have already fallen.  Our arsenal of leaf weapons consists of a tractor blower, two turbine blowers pulled with carts, 8 backpack blowers, 3 rotary mowers, a small vacuum, and a big vacuum.  We also have a couple of chainsaws, which do really well at eliminating leaves.  Depending on wind direction, ground conditions, frost, golf schedule, and upcoming forecast we will select as many of those weapons as possible to fight the problem.  We have more tools than staff so it's never possible to use everything at once.  On a windy day we do the best we can, but sometimes it's just not possible to keep things clear.

All our guys take an oath to never blow a leaf onto someone else's property.  They get sick of us saying it every morning.  Those of you who live on the course have the same leaf issues we do and I understand your frustrations this time of year.  I wish we had the manpower, time, and equipment to provide leaf removal service for everyone, but as you can see from the course we are clearly overwhelmed.  Please do not blow your leaves onto the course and make sure any hired help understands this as well.    Thanks to golfers and neighbors for your patience with leaf season!

- R & H #21-4 HANDICAP COMMITTEE RANDOM REVIEWS

HANDICAP COMMITTEE RANDOM REVIEWS

The USGA Rules of Handicapping outline the responsibilities of the Player and the Handicap Committee. Those responsibilities are specified in the USGA Rules of Handicapping, Rule 1.3 and can be read or downloaded from usga.org. Our purpose here is not to explain the rules of handicapping, but to publicize to the membership plans for the Rules and Handicap Committee to comply with its responsibility in accordance with the Rules of Handicapping.

A part of the Handicap Committee’s responsibility to administer and monitor the Club’s handicap program includes reviewing players’ handicaps. To comply with this responsibility, the Fawn Lake Rules and Handicap Committee will begin to conduct periodic random reviews.

The initial effort will be to obtain Tee Sheet reports from the Pro Shop staff and compare those to a few randomly selected players GHIN records to determine that scores are being posted. This is not a “Handicap Police” effort. If the committee discovers that any player’s GHIN records do not reflect scores for dates he/she is listed on the tee sheet report, the associated player may simply be asked to explain why scores are not posted and/or be reminded to correct the situation. The Committee is aware the USGA Rules of Handicapping specify situations where scores are not to be posted. If a review reveals any player repeatedly fails to post scores that should be posted, the Rules and Handicap Committee may adjust the player’s handicap index as specified in the USGA Rules of Handicapping.

The Handicap Committee will also review scores of 2021 tournaments (competition scores).

These efforts are two of several your Board of Directors/Golf Committee/Rules and Handicap Committee is pursuing to ensure that our growing Fawn Lake Country Club golf program is fairly and efficiently administered and monitored, thereby allowing all our members to compete in every Net Score tournament administered by the Pro Shop, Fawn Lake Men’s’ Group and Ladies’ Golf Association.

A MESSAGE FROM DAVE SMITH: FLCC GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

A Post About Posts

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 07:09 AM PDT

Recently there has been a lot of chatter about what the white topped posts mean...

You should not leave the path before you pass the first white topped post and you should return to the path before you pass the second white topped post...

In a situation where your ball lies well beyond the first post, you should stay on the path until you reach a point abeam your ball and then turn 90 degrees to get to your ball (hence the term 90 Degree Rule).  If, from that point, you hit a shot to the green, you should go back to the path at a 90 degree angle.  I see people exit the path at the first post and then drive 50 yards down the fairway to get to their ball.  Then they drive another 50 yards to the second post before going back to the path.   The posts aren't meant to identify the exact location where you have to enter and exit.  They are simply "goal posts" you should try to stay between.

Riding beyond the second post in the fairway and then turning back towards the tee to exit at the post is not part of the "rule".  Yes, at times the posts are really protecting the fescue more than the zoysia.  However, there are a lot of times where the reverse is true.  Earlier this week we had enough rain to create a number of wet areas, but not so much to require keeping carts on the path.  The posts, if followed, keep those wet areas from getting damaged.  From now until next spring the course will tend to be wetter and the zoysia will be dormant.  We need the posts to help us protect the course and that includes the zoysia as well as the fescue.

DAMAGE TO THE 7TH GREEN

During the Evening/Overnight hours Friday 27 August/Saturday 28, damage pictured below was done to the back left side of the 7th Green.  Quite obviously, a misguided person drove a golf cart onto the green.

When discovered on Saturday morning, Superintendent Dave Smith's crew completed temporary repairs which look good.  By location, this damage should not affect play and Dave has a plan for a permanent repair this week that should heal quickly.

FLCC has filed a report with FLCA Security and will discuss plans of action for future deterrence and reporting.

Zoom in on picture below that was taken after the temporary repairs.  More "magic" from Dave's crew!

POSTING YOUR SCORE WHEN YOU DON'T FINISH THE HOLE(S)

THERE ARE TIMES SUCH AS MATCH PLAY AND FOUR BALL (Member/Guest and Member/Member Tournaments) where you may not complete playing a hole.  In these situations, it does not mean you don't post a score for the hole or the round; it doesn't mean you automatically post a par, bogey, double bogey or post the same score as your partner (who played out the hole in Four Ball competition); here is what the USGA Rules says:

Adjustment of Hole Scores

Q. I started a hole but did not complete it. What score do I post?
A. When the format of play allows you to start a hole but not complete it, the score recorded for handicap purposes is your most likely score, equal to:
  • The number of strokes already taken on the hole, plus
  • Any penalty strokes incurred during the hole, plus
  • The number of strokes you would most likely require to complete the hole.
A most likely score is a reasonable assessment made by you based on the score you are most likely to make from that spot more than half the time. The following guidelines should be used to determine a most likely score:
  • If the ball lies on the putting green no more than 5 feet from the hole, add one stroke.
  • If the ball lies between 5 feet and 20 yards from the hole, add 2 or 3 additional strokes depending on the position of the ball, difficulty of the green and your ability.
  • If the ball lies more than 20 yards from the hole, add 3 or 4 additional strokes depending on the position of the ball, difficulty of the green and your ability.
(Rule 3.3, Rules of Handicapping)
----------------------------------------------------------
There were a number of scorecards in the recent Member / Member where players only posted the score of the player who "played the hole out" for the competition and the player who "picked up" did not post any score at all.  This left the ProShop unable to post scores and thus request players to appropriately complete the score(s) for holes not recorded and a total score for a round.
Please go to the ProShop and, in accordance with the rules stated above, complete your scorecards and then post YOUR MEMBER/MEMBER TOURNAMENT SCORES IN  GHIN.
ADDITIONALLY ALL PLAYERS WHO COMPETED IN THE MEMBER/GUEST TOURNAMENT ON 25/26 JUNE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR IMMEDIATELY POSTING A GROSS SCORE FOR EACH OF THEIR FIVE 9-HOLE ROUNDS I.A.W. USGA RULES ABOVE (for unfinished holes) FOR  BOTH THEIR FRIDAY AND SATURDAY INDIVIDUAL ROUNDS.  MEMBER-GUEST SCORECARDS ARE IN THE PROSHOP FOR REFERENC.
More to follow from the FLCC Rules and Handicap Committee on this.
