Handicaps and Score Posting 

We all now rely on the World Handicap System (WHS) and the USGA Rules of Handicapping when playing golf. The WHS is what allows us to have fun, competitive and fair competition between golfers of different abilities. Whether it’s a trash talking event with your buddies or a Club event where you are playing the field, the handicap system provides a framework that lets us all compete on equal footing. Now that the golf season is in full swing here at Fawn Lake, we want to remind the Membership to post all scores of play with other individuals or groups. 

If you play in a club event, the Pro Shop will post for you. Otherwise, you are responsible for posting your own scores. The USGA Handicap Manual states you should post your score by the end of the day. 

 We have a couple scenarios that may cause some confusion:

 1.    Away Rounds - If you play another course other than Fawn Lake, you are still        

            required to post your scores. All courses are in the USGA GHIN app.

 2.    Match Play - You are required to post all scores from match play, even if 

do not complete all 18 holes. The Handicap Manual states:

 If 14 or more holes are played, the player must post an 18-hole score. If 7 to  13 holes are played, the player must post a nine-hole score. In either case, scores for holes not played must be recorded as par plus any handicap strokes that the player is entitled to receive on the holes that are not played.

 If you wake up one morning and realize you forgot to post a previous round, you can still go back and post that score. Just be sure to set the correct date the round was played.

 In closing, the WHS works well and allows us to all be competitive across the board, but only if we are all attempting to make the best score possible at each hole and submit all acceptable scores.

CARE AND CARING FOR YOUR GOLF COURSE - BE PROACTIVE

 WE ALL NEED TO STEP UP, BE INDIVIDUALLY RESPONSIBLE AND "PROFESSIONALLY ASSERTIVE" WITH TEAM MATES,  PLAYING PARTNERS, GUESTS AND OURSELVES WITH REGARDS TO THE "CARE OF AND CARING FOR" OUR GOLF COURSE.

Since assuming the position of Golf Committee Chairman on January 1st, my #1 priority has been to personally find a means of encouraging, leading, or urging every FLCC member to take a personal interest in doing everything they can to take care of, repair, and prevent wear, tear, and damage to the golf course. 

At every Golf Committee meeting this year, committee members have discussed, tried to thinks of ways to prevent, and remained frustrated with things like: 

        > players not staying on the cart path when parking adjacent to tee boxes or green look (next time you play, make a point of checking those two  specific locations and it is very easy to see golf cart tracks and areas where the grass is worn away)

        > players not entering and exiting the fairways at the designated markers and at 90 degrees (look at the tire tracks across the fescue rough prior to the entry marker and past the exit markers and soon as the hot weather remains, those tracks turn brown)

        > players not filling divots from the tee box through the fairways (check the divots and also notice how many players don't use sand provided on golf carts or personal carts to fill divots or even take the sand out of the cart)

        > players allowing partners, guests, or opponents to drive in the roughs (see the tire tracks in the rough or view some pictures provided on Dave Smith's Blog - http://flccturfcare.blogspot.com)   

        >  sand traps not raked to repair foot prints, divots, etc. (pretty obvious around the course, so much so some folks wonder why we even bother leaving rakes out at all)   

        > players not repairing ball marks on the greens (see brown ball marks left not repaired; see fresh ball marks not repaired and obviously from partners, teammates, competitors, or players not to far in front of you)  

We are entering the "prime season" for our course, it looks and plays great; almost through out the course except for the discrepancies cited above.  With the heat we experienced this week and will experience throughout the summer, the fescue roughs especially get "fragile" and easily worn down and damaged by excessive cart use in the roughs.  The grass of ball marks on greens left not properly fixed end up dead and brown within a day.  The areas of no grass adjacent to tee boxes and greens get even larger.  And with the higher volume of play, sand traps look like there was a 5 person brawl in them.

This topic has been (ad nauseam) addressed, broadcast, appealed to at Women and Men's meetings, and encouraged by the Pro's prior to tournaments.  But here I am whining, barking, and appealing once again.

We are looking at getting stickers for our golf carts with reminders regarding these items.  

We will continue to appeal for consideration and compliance.  

WHAT ELSE?

My one suggestion and appeal FOR OUR COURSE is: 

                         PEER PRESSURE and BE PROFESSIONALLY ASSERTIVE!

    * Remind yourself and those you ride with if you notice your cart parked off the paths at tee boxes and greens.

    * DON'T enter fairways early and leave past the exit marker; CALL your cart driver on it.

    * Most likely guests, but possibly members, BE ASSERTIVE with them if you see them driving in the rough when they should be in the fairway or on the path,.

    * PLEASE MAKE SURE THERE IS SAND IN THE CONTAINER OF YOUR CART - FILL IT BEFORE YOU TEE OFF ON #1; FILL YOURS AND A COUPLE OTHER DIVOTS ON THE FRONT NINE; REPEAT ON THE BACK NINE.

    * RAKE THE TRAP AFTER YOU PLAY FROM IT; leave the rake outside the trap; and make sure those you are playing with do the same.

    * Make finding and fixing your ball mark on the green a priority.  If you are playing with John Doe and he doesn't fix his ball mark: "Hey John, I fixed your ball mark" and REPEAT until he gets the message.  Fix a few marks left behind by others.

RELIEF FROM ABNORMAL COURSE CONDITIONS - USGA RULE 16

CART PATH REPAIR ON HOLES 3, 4, 6, 7 & 9 RESULTED IN "ABNORMAL COURSE CONDITIONS"

As a result of recent work and repairs on holes 3, 4, 6, 7 & 9 "Abnormal Course Conditions" have come into play immediately adjacent to cart paths on these holes.  Because of the extent of these repairs, all of these areas have not been marked as Ground Under Repair

Under USGA Rule 16, a player is entitled to free relief by dropping the ball in a "relief area".  

Accordingly and in simple terms:

ANY DISTURBED AREA THAT IS THE RESULT OF CONSTRUCTION OR REPAIR OF CART PATHS ON HOLES 3, 4, 6, 7 & 9 IS TO BE CONSIDERED GROUND UNDER REPAIR, AND THE PLAYER IS ENTITLED TO 1 CLUB LENGTH RELIEF FROM THE NEAREST POINT OF FULL RELIEF, NOT NEARER TO THE HOLE.

 Looking to get more distance off the Tee? 5 simple steps to remember during your round! 

Step 1: Setting up to the ball

Many of the characteristics at impact are influenced by the way we stand over the golf ball before we start our swing. Beginning golfers are encouraged to obtain natural, neutral positions that help the hit solid golf shots. For the driver, getting a better set up can mean more fairways and much longer drives. To maximize distance, drivers should be played with the golf ball resting on a tee near your lead foot, the left foot for a right-handed golfer. As players grip the club, they should feel their trail shoulder, right shoulder for the right-handed golfer, tilt below their lead shoulder creating a backward tilt in their spine angle. This setup and spinal tilt will set the stage for the following steps.

Step 2: Hit up on the golf ball

With the golf ball near your front foot, it will be easier for you to strike the golf ball with an ascending blow. The angle of attack of each golf swing can heavily influence the launch and spin conditions of the golf balls flight. Upward angles of attack with a driver help create higher launching, lower spinning golf shots that fly further in the air and roll out more once they land.

Step 3: Eliminating slices and sidespin

While it is not inevitable that a drawing golf shot will fly further than a fade, golf shots hit with too much backspin or sidespin are robbed of distance and accuracy. The club delivery conditions that help players hit a draw often lead to a more penetrating ball flight with more total distance. To hit a draw, a right-handed golfer must hit the golf ball with a club face that is more left, or closed, to their club path. A functional draw is hit when the club path is traveling in-to-out with a club face that is closed to that path but to the right of the target line. Left-handed players, they should see a club face that is right of a leftward moving golf club path. Club faces that are termed “closed” to club paths often result in golf shots hit with less dynamic loft, less spin, and more distance.

Step 4: Hit the golf ball in or above the sweet spot

The best place to hit the golf club for your maximum ball speeds is directly in the sweet spot. Your driver, however, may produce higher launching, lower spinning golf shots by striking the golf ball slightly above this area. Golf shots struck in the upper part of the golf club face often launch higher and spin less than golf shots struck directly in the middle. This effect, called gear effect, helps players to get even more distance without increase club head speed or ball speeds.

Step 5: Using golf clubs that were made for you

Each golfer must be playing the right equipment for your game. Buying golf clubs off the shelf simply will not perform as well as golf clubs that have been meticulously crafted for your swing style and type. Being custom fit by a professional club fitter and club builder can guarantee that you are swinging each club with the greatest amount of power and efficiency. Delivering the sweet spot of the golf club back to the golf ball more often can improve your confidence, shed excess spin rates, and optimize launch conditions to build your ultimate long distance drive.

 A TWO WEEK DELAY IN THE FLCC ICEBREAKER EVENT RESULTED IN WARMER WEATHER, A MUCH DRIER COURSE, AND INCREASED PARTICIPATION FROM 33 TO 51 PLAYERS (17 THREE-PERSON TEAMS).

WHILE THE COURSE AND PLAYERS WERE WORKING THEMSELVES INTO SHAPE, THE GREENS, HAVING BEEN ROLLED AND MOWN, CAUGHT MANY OFF GUARD WITH A SPEED THAT WAS MUCH GREATER THAN PREVIOUS WEEKS.

WHEN ALL WAS SAID AND DONE AND FINAL PUTTS MADE ON #18, PLAYERS GATHERED AT THE LAKESIDE GRILLE FOR FUN, A DRINK, STORIES OF 3-PUTTS AND MORE, AND PROMISES OF BETTER SCORES NEXT TIME.

Thereafter, for the next five days the forecast is for rain and possibly more snow mixed in.

DO:  

KEEP ALL 4 WHEELS ON THE CART PATH---ALWAYS!

(If you must park along the fairway prior to arriving at the green, park adjacent to the fairway side of the path (ON THE PATH) to provide room for your partners to pass on (ON THE PATH) on the side away from the fairway.

DON'T: 

    - CUT CORNERS IN THE ZIGS AND ZAGS OF THE CART PATH

    - DON'T PASS PARKED CARTS BY TURNING ONTO THE COURSE

    - DON'T PARK OFF THE PATHS AT TEE BOXES & GREENS.

Welcome to your Rules and Handicap Committee's first installment  of "Chatter" about rules, interpretations, and "what do I do if...?"  These presentations will hopefully be a training aide and refresher for all Fawn Lake Golf Members.  The R&H Committee solicits your questions about or recommendations for specific rulings for situations you may have encountered or wondered about here at Fawn Lake.  If appropriate, your input may end up being explained and presented like the one to follow.  In any case, the R&H folks will get back to you with an answer to your query.
