HEAT AND STORMS AND YOUR GOLF COURSE

SHARING AN EMAIL FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT WITH HIS PERMISSION...please click and read the link

Hi all,

Just touching base so you’re up to speed.  We are still in ICU as far as bentgrass goes on greens and tees, but weather should break soon in our favor.  Wet Wilt and scald are the biggest issues on tees.  The frequent rains in July and August were the culprit.  Summer disease pressure on greens was and is very extreme as well.  Additionally, preventive weed control measures taken earlier in the year are no longer effective as can be seen by the goosegrass population that has exploded since late July.  We have begun making weed control apps on tees, but cannot treat greens until they are healthier.  The September 12/13 greens aeration will consist of .2” diameter coring tines set to a very shallow depth and tight spacing.  The clean-up will be easy and there will be very little, if any, sand involved.  We will add seed to thin areas (entire green in some cases) and will likely raise mowing heights slightly to help accommodate new seed and weak turf.  If this process goes well, then we’ll use it again on Oct. 10/11.  The November 15/16 work will be based on status of recovery and weather at the time.

This article that came out today pretty much sums up our recent struggles.  Heat and Storms

THE COURSE COULD NOT LOOK BETTER THANKS TO THE HOT TEMPERATURES, HUMIDITY, AND FREQUENT HEAVY RAIN SHOWERS.  IN TRUTH, IT IS VERY FRAGILE.  DON'T ALWAYS ENTER THE FAIRWAY THROUGH THE ROUGH AT THE FIRST WHITE TIPPED POLE.  CORRECTLY, PLEASE INITIALLY ENTER THE FAIRWAYS AT 90 DEGREES ABEAM YOUR GOLF BALL LOCATION AND THEN EXIT AT 90 DEGREES PRIOR TO THE 2ND WHITE TIPPED BLACK POLE THUS MINIMIZING TRACKS, WEAR AND TEAR ON THE FESCUE ROUGHS.  PROPERLY FIX BALL MARKS ON GREENS; SEE A PREVIOUS NOTE ON DAVE'S BLOG FOR THE CORRECT WAY TO REPAIR A BALL MARK.  TAKE SAND WITH YOU FOR ALL FAIRWAY AND TEE SHOTS AND REPAIR DIVOTS; THE GROWING SEASON IS GOOD AND IT'S A GOOD TIME FOR DIVOTS TO GROW BACK.  OH YEAH, LEARN THE PROPER WAY TO HIT AND TAKE DIVOTS ON THE DRIVING RANGE...DIVOTS IN A STRAIGHT LINE.

CURRENT FLCC COURSE MAINTENANCE CHALLENGES

 SUPERINTENDENT DAVE SMITH'S BLOG POST

FLCC Course Maintenance

We're Waiting

Posted: 11 Jul 2022 06:05 PM PDT

Last January we ordered a tractor and it arrived in November.  Last December we ordered a greens roller and a trencher and both are elsewhere with no ETA.  Both those items are critical to our operation.  Recently we've had several routine equipment issues and are patiently waiting on parts so we can get things fixed.  We've had only one rough mower for more than a month while waiting on hydraulic wheel motors to arrive.  We can't keep up with rough mowing with one mower.  We ordered a used wide area tractor mounted pull behind mower to try and help us get by, but we are waiting on that too.  We are waiting on a pedal switch for my electric cart and an alternator for Alan's mower.  We are waiting on two hoses for handwatering as well.  Basically, anything we might need we can count on waiting for.  In some cases it looks like the wait will be over a year.  Waiting is not my strong suit and the course is not good at it either.  We need the stuff we ordered and are having some difficulties coping without it.  It'll feel like Christmas when it arrives so that's what I'm looking forward to.  Please cross your fingers that our lone rough mower survives until the part arrives for the broken mower and/or the new "used" mower arrives.  If not, we may need hundreds of volunteers to bring out their lawn mowers.

NEW LOCAL RULE REGARDING SOD REPLACEMENT AROUND GREENS AND OTHER LOCATIONS

 LOCAL RULE F-7

As many of you have noticed, Dave and his crew are working hard replacing sod in a number of places on the golf course including the surrounds of greens and several other places in the general playing areas of the course.  To accommodate players during this activity the R&H Committee has recommended and the Golf Committee has approved the immediate implementation of Local Rule F-7.

Local Rule F-7

“If a player’s ball lies in or touches a seam of cut turf or a seam interferes with a player’s area of intended swing:

(a)      Ball in General Area:  The player may take relief under Rule 16.1b

(drop, one club length from nearest point of complete relief, in the General Area, no closer to the hole)

(b)      Ball on Putting Green:  The player may take relief under Rule 16.1d.

(placing the original or another ball on the spot of the nearest point of complete relief, either on the Putting Green or in the General Area)

BUT interference does not exist if the seam only interferes with the player’s stance.

All seams within the area of cut turf are treated as the same seam in taking relief.  This means that if a player has interference from any seam after dropping the ball, the player must proceed as required under Rule 14.3c(2) even when the ball is still within one club-length of the reference point.”

DIVOTS, BUNKER RAKING, AND BALL MARK REPAIRS

 image.png

Does this picture look familiar?  Yep it is one of our Fawn Lake Bunkers and confirmed to have been left that way by our own members.  I have recently been approached by a number of members, our Superintendent and Green Committee Chairman on how we can encourage/force members to:
1. Fix divots on the tee box and fairways.
2. Properly rake foot marks and "blast" marks in bunkers.
3. Repair their ball marks on the greens.

As Chairman of the Golf Committee the past two years and FLMG before that, I sent pictures and messages out to the membership regarding these topics along with cart path procedures and proper means of entering and exiting the fairways that met with various responses from "yes I agree", to "there's just nothing we can do" to "don't yell at us" to admonishment for attempts at a humorous message approach to the problems

Well, fellow members, it's a new year and the course is coming into shape wonderfully owing to the cool and damp weather mixed with a little sun for the fairways and the roughs; while the greens are just about ready to be perfect post aeration, sand, dressing, some nice rain and attention by Dave's staff.

But the old bugaboos of unraked sandtraps and unrepaired ball marks remain a pox on our course. I would ask for your personal attention to the details of these two problems and your "professional assertiveness" and peer pressure to your playing partners for their attention as well.  Please check the sand bottles on your cart before you head to the first tee and fix the divots made on tee boxes and in fairways.

As an added incentive and assistance in the proper procedures for raking bunkers and fixing ball marks, please click on and take a few minutes to view the two associated videos that follow:

THANKS FOR EVERYONE'S SUPPORT AND INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION TO THE AFOREMENTIONED ISSUES FACING OUR COURSE AND COMMITMENT TO TAKING APPROPRIATE ACTIONS, AS NEEDED,  AFTER EVERY SHOT IN EVERY ROUND.

RESCHEDULED "DIVOT DAY" - MAY 2ND

 Divot Day  Call for Volunteers

DUE TO COMPLICATIONS FROM WEATHER, GREENS AERATION, AND CART PATH REPAIRS, ANNUAL "DIVOT DAY" HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR MONDAY, MAY 2ND AT 1PM.

SIGN UP SHEET WILL BE IN THE PRO SHOP SOON.  PLEASE STOP BY AND SIGN UP FOR A HOLE TEE BOXES OR FAIRWAY.  ON MAY 2ND, PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN 5 GALLON BUCKETS OR OTHER LARGE CONTAINERS AND A SCOOP.  SAND AND A FEW BUCKETS & SCOOPS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN FRONT OF THE PRO SHOP.  PLEASE PLAN ON ARRIVING SO AS TO "LOAD UP" AND BE ON YOUR RESPECTIVE TEE BOX OR FAIRWAY AT 1 PM.

INITIAL NOTE REGARDING "DIVOT DAY"

Dear Fawn Lake Golfer

It looks like, contrary to our recent weather, spring is in the air. Dave and his staff are working hard to get ready for the upcoming season. It has been a very wet winter and we’ve had more “cart path only” days than we would have preferred. We have a trenching tool on order to address our drainage issues so that, in the future, we’ll be spending more time driving to our balls.

One of the effects of having to walk to our ball is that we’re not able to lug our sand along with our clubs, towels, range finder, etc that we keep in our carts. This has caused big growth in unfilled divots in our fairways and on the tee boxes. Because of this, we have scheduled our annual Divot Day for Wednesday the 20th of April.

We will be looking for 32 volunteers (14 fairways and tees and 4 holes for tees only). Sign up at the Pro Shop starting on April 13th. We’ll provide the sand. If you have a bucket and scoop, please bring them. If not, we’ll supply as many buckets as we have. Meet at the Pro Shop at 10am to pick up your sand and then head out to our assigned holes.

Thanks for your help in keeping our course in as pristine shape as possible and making it one of the premier courses in the state.

2022 FLCC GOLF EVENTS CALENDAR (Update 21Mar22)

Having been informed some folks could not access the link to the CALENDAR below, we have reposted.

This post makes an update regarding the Veteran's Day Golf Tournament.  That tournament is cosponsored by the FLCC and FLCA.  Accordingly, the text coloring for that event has been properly adjusted.

This remains an ambitious schedule with new competition events on Tuesday and Friday evenings, a few less Saturday FLMG events, less weekend outside events, our traditional weekly competitions and major events and an overall effort to provide opportunities for all FLCC Golfers to play, compete, and enjoy themselves individually and as part of a team or group.

From the entire Golf Committee; All the best for a very fun filled 2022 Golf Season!!
